Yesterday I watched for the second time the German movie " Lola rennt " ( RUN LOLA RUN ), by Tom Tkywer, with Franka Potente and Moritz Bleibtreu (1). I like this kind of movies so much because I am fascinated by the theory of parallel universes. I wrote a few years ago a short story about a parallel universe where, in December 1977, the Tunisian President Habib Bourguiba, refuses the proposal of his Prime Minister, Hedi Nouira, to appoint Ben Ali as Director of National Security at the Ministry of the Interior.
In this universe Ben Ali leads the life of a colonel, and later general, of the Tunisian army until his retirement. In this parallel universe 99,99% of the Tunisian citizens have never heard of Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali. Zine will never meet Leila Trabelsi, who has a brilliant career as hairdresser and boss of a prosperous hairdressing school in Tunis. She is nowadays proud of counting among her faithful customers the grand-daughter of the present Tunisian President, Mohamed Mzali who inherited the throne of Carthage after the President Bourguiba had succumbed to a heart attack back in 1984. President Mohamed Mzali, who will celebrate soon his 85th birthday, promised to quit politics and public life at the end of his term in 2014 and dedicate himself to literature. Wait and see…
